Samothrace:
Samothrace is located in the northeastern Aegean sea, known since antiquity as the "Sacred Island", since the Kaviria Mysteries took place there, mysteries similar to the Eleusinian Mysteries. The name probably comes from the look of the mountainous volume. The pre-Hellenic word "samos" means height and Samothrace is the high Thrace. Its shape is oval and the area is approximately of 178 square kilometres in extent. The highest mountain is Saos (1664 m) with its top the Feggari. Due to the efforts of the Cultural Association of Samothrace and of the municipality, the cultural heritage is preserved and it is displayed via the various events and via the revivals of the traditional customs that take place throughout the year, especially during the summer months. The island is about 22 nautical miles away from Alexandroupoli.
